- All that can be said for certain at this stage is that in «b»1851«/b» «b»Scotland Census«/b» Margaret Lundie, a 32 year old "boot binder" was living with her 68 yr old mother, Janet Lundie and siblings: Helen Lundie (38), James Lundie (36), Jessie Lundie (31) and George Lundie (20), at 40, Maule Street, St Vigeans, Angus.
In «b»1861«/b» Margaret is at the same address 40 Maule Street, St Vigeans where a transcription error reports her occupation as a "Boot Cinder"(!?) Her name was written as "Margt" so this record was only found because her niece, Jessie Lamb, was staying in the house as well.«b» «/b» Another Margaret Lundie aged 78, who is erroneously listed as her mother, is doing the house keeping. I still have not fully worked out who this person is and how they are related but she definitely was not Margaret's mother.
From here on it gets very complicated, as the spelling of Margaret's husband's name is most variable and records hard to find.
The records show that in «b»1869«/b» Margaret married "WILLIAM SOUTER" in Arbroath, although the name has come down in the family as "Soutar".
(No Soutars can be found in the Ancestry.com Census records.
There is only one entry for a Margaret Souter which is found in the «b»1881 Scotland Census «/b»in the Arbroath area but the year of birth is out by 10 years.)
«u»Information supplied by the library at Arbroath:«/u»
Margaret Soutar (52) and her husband William Soutar (67) were residing at 64 Rossie Street, Arbroath where William was a [market] gardener in a record they have from the «b»1871 Scotland Census«/b». {Scan of the record in Soutar file}
There is however the following entry in the Wills & Testaments:
«b»«i»Souter Margaret«/b»«tab»09/02/1882 or «b»Lundie«/b», widow of «b»William Souter«/b», Rossie Street, Arbroath, d. 07/04/1881 at the Royal Lunatic Asylum, Montrose, testate. Forfar Sheriff Court«tab»SC47/40/48
«b»«/i»
«/b»William Souter's will left his property, a house and the attached plot of land, to Margaret, unless she should re-marry. They don't appear to have had any children as the rest of his will leaves property to a brother and an nephew. For that time they seem to have been well off, as his estate would worth be the equivalent to $2,066,400.00 (using the relative share of GDP) in today's money. How sad that someone who appears to have been so well off should die incarcerated.
