- I could find no Cenus records in Ancestry.com for this family so I am very grateful for the help of Karen Findlay, Library Assistant, Arbroath Library for the following.*
*«b»William Soutar«/b» aged 40 and his wife «b»Ann«/b» were residing in St Vigeans according to the «b»1841 Scotland Census«/b»
*The «b»1851 Scotland Census«/b» records William aged 48 whose occuptation is given as "«i»Gardener, Farmer of four acres, employing 2 labourers«/i»", residing in St.Vigeans with wife Ann; Labourer, David Maxwell; and Ann Alexander, house servant. No children are mentioned.
«b»*1861 Scotland Census «/b»shows that William was not at Rossie Street . On checking the valuation rolls for this time the Arbroath Librarian found that William was residing at 64 Rossie Street only from 1863. It also mentioned in this roll that the building was unfinished and it gave William's address as St. Vigeans. On checking the 1861 Census records again for «b»St.Vigeans«/b» the librarian traced a William Soutar aged 64** at 92 St. Vigeans Garden (occupation Market Gardener) with his first wife Ann Soutar; an Isabella Smith, aged 14(Visitor); Mary Smith, aged 12 (Domestic Servant); and Charles Ochterlony (Brother-in-law, Day Labourer). [See scan in Soutar file]
** There is a discrepancy with the age of William from 1861 to 1871 however I am sure I have the right one as the occupation and place of birth matches
In «b»1866«/b» his wife, «b»Ann Sout«u»e«/u»r«/b» died in Arbroath.
In «b»1869«/b» William married «b»Margaret Lundie«/b». He was 67years old and she was 51.
«b»1871 Scotland Census shows«/b» a William Soutar residing at 64 Rossie Street, aged 67 (Occupation – Gardener) with his wife Margaret Soutar aged 52, and his 88-year old mother-in-law, Janet Lundie.
William died in 1873 and left his unfinished(?) house and his lands to his wife, Margaret. William appears to be have been quite well off as his estate was valued at £1,440 in 1873. He appears to have had no children as all his estate went to his wife, and upon her death to his two brothers and one nephew. [Copy of his Will in the Soutar file]
