Notes - From the baptismal register for March 1669:
"«i»een soontje van Groote Catrijn wiert genaemt Christoffel tot getuyge stont Step Angila«/i»"
The father of Christoffel SNIJMAN was Hans Christoffel Snijman a soldier who had a relationship witht he slave Catharina van Bengale, also known as Groote Catrijn. On 30 July 1667 his father was sent to Robben Island.
In a letter dated 6 January 1672 it was noted that Groot Catrijn had been freed. Later, she married the "Free black" Anthony (Jansz) van Bengale, who became the stepfather of Christoffel. He inherited his stepfathers estate when the whole family (Catrijn, Anthonij and his half-sister Petronella died of unknown causes in 1682.
Christoffel Snyman farmed on the farm «i»Sandvliet«/i» in Groot Drakensteinin in 1692, in partnership with Ernst Friedrich Walter. After his death his widow married Henning Viljoen.
It is interesting to note his mixed ancestry, in the light of his father-in-laws racist ourbursts against mixed blood.
In the Cape Muster ROll for 1695 the couple are listed as "«i»Christoffel Snijman & Margrita de Savoye 4 k«/i»"
