    • Geertjen Gerrits was murdered by a slave in in March 1692

Maria/Marie van Negapatnam was a slave of Geertjen en Jan Coenraad Visser, and witnssed the murder of her mistress Geertjen Gerrits by a fellow slave. Shell in "Children of Bondage", incorrectly indicates that the murdered woman was Catherina Everts van der Zee (Geertjen's daughter-in-law), but most sources agree this incident describes the murder of Geertjen Gerrits. Final confirmation awaits an opportunity to consult the original sources. The description in Children of bondage says:

On a Friday evening in March 1692 a slave girl, Maria van de kus van Coromandel, was working in the kitchen with her mistress ...on a market-garden farm at Wittebome (near present day Wynberg) when a household slave, Claas van Mallebar, passed through the kitchen on his way to chop wood in the yard. Mistress ... scolded Claas for not fetching the cows in time for for her baking and refused to believe his excuse that he had been on the mountain looking for them. Whereupon Claas turned and spat out: [«i»"Jou oud hond, Jij moogste den selvs gaan halen"] «/i»" You old dog, go and fetch them yourself!". [The mistress then] attempted to strike Claas, but he lifted his axe and buried the weapon in her neck. The fatal blow, according to the surgeon's report, almost severed her head. This nightmare unfolded in front of Maria, and she ran from the house shouting, [«i»"Baas! Baas! Moeder is dood! Moeder is dood!"«/i»] "Boss, Boss! Mother is dead! Mother is dead!" …The prosecutor…settled on havi

Other sources suggest that the slave Maria was the mistress of Geertjen's husband Jan Coenraad Visser, as well as of two of her sons.

Acording to Mansell Upham, Geertjen Gerrits was alos know as Grietjie Grof.
