    • «i»The Conquering Hero«/i» arrived at Port Natal, 28 June 1850, carrying the Mcphersons, namely:

      The death certificate of Alexander Jamieson Macpherson lists his occupation as Shopkeeper and Farmer. His place of death was Lyell St, Ladysmith.

      His name is spelled McPherson on his marriage certificate, and Macpherson on his death certificate.

      He is listed on the Scotland census of 1841 as George - and according to Shelagh O'Byrne Spencer he is listed in the Ladysmith Govt. reg. of deaths as George Alexander Jamieson, although the George and Jamieson appear to have been added later.

      He was married in Ladysmith in 1862 and resident in Ladysmith at least by February 1864. On February 9 of that year he advertised in the Natal Witness:
      "Wildebeeste Hotel, Ladysmith. A. Macpherson begs to inform his friends and the public that at the above Hotel they will meet with every comfort and convenience. Good Stabling. Billiards"

      In the Natal Almanc for 1881 he is listed as a Storekeeper in Ladysmith.

      According to his granddaughter Dulcie, "he was a gentleman of sorts and started the first gentlemans club in Ladysmith. Shortly after his marriage he bought a 3000 acre farm at Matiwane (just outside Ladysmith) for a bottle of brandy. His son Frederick was born on this farm. After his death it was sold for 3 pounds ten an acre" (Quoted in Bessie Calvert Allen's book "The Swift Ships".

      He is mentioned several times in the Natal Witness:

      Feb 2, 1855 Advertising "A.J. Macpherson Painter, Glazier and Paper Hanger has commenced business on his own at his father's, No. 9, Church St. Punctuality and despatch will be his system. Charges moderate." At this time he would hve been about 18.
      April 5, 1861: Read a notice from Mr A Macpherson at the council meeting. The mayor was authorised to pay his bill.

      His name is often given as George Alexander Jamieson Macpherson, including on the baptism record of his grandson Frederic Jamieson Macpherson.
