Notes - His father is uncertain, though he adopted the last name of his stepfather Douw Gerbrandt Steyn. It is possible he was the illegitimate child of Douw Gerbrandt Steyn and his mother, the slave Maria Lozee van de Caap, and took his name when his parents later married.
From the Cape baptismal register, 29 August 1683:

He and his wife and 5 children appear in the de la Fonteine report of 1731 with the comment "«i»Is Een Arm Man«/i»" (is a poor man)
They are living in the Cape District (de Caab) in the 1733 Muster Roll: "«i»Jacobus Steijn & Maria Potgieter«/i»"
