  from Leeuwarden, arrived at the Cape about 1672, "messelaar" (bricklayer, mason) in the service of the VOC He was leader of the group of 19 Masons who built the Castle of Good Hope. His marriage to MAria Lozee (possibly a slave from the lodge) is recorded in the Cape Register as "«i»den 19. dito (Augustus) Douwe Gerbrants van Leeuwarden, en Maria Loozie van de Caep.«/i»" 1686 "opsiender van die kerkhof van Stellenbosch" (in charge of the churchyard at Stellenbosch), 1697 followed Oldeland as town engineer. He was married in the Netherlands and his son Age was baptised on 11 Oct 1661 in Leeuwarden. This son never went to the Cape. Remarried 19 Aug 1685 with Maria Lozee. She remarried 27 Feb 1701 with Paul Heyns. Before her marriage to Douwe she had a son Jacobus, father unknown, who later adopted the name Steyn. He may have been the illegitimate son of Douwe Gerbrandt. Douw Gerbrandt Steyn and Maria Lozee van de Caap were witnesses at the baptism on 31 August 1687, of Maria Potgieter, daughter of Harmen Janz Potgieter and Isabella Frederiks. Maria and Jacobus Steyn would marry in 1706. van Leeuwarden, aankoms: omstr. 1672, messelaar in diens H.O.I.K.; 1686 "opsiender van die kerkhof van Stellenbosch", 1697 opvolger van Oldeland as stadsingenieur. Hy was in Nederland getroud en sy seun Age is 11 Oct 1661 in Leeuwarden gedoop. Hierdie seun het nooit na Suid-Afrika gekom nie. gesterf: Maart of April 1700. hertroud: 19 Aug 1685 Maria Lozee, van onbek. herkoms. Sy hertrou 27 Feb 1701 met Paul Heyns.
