- Stamvader, born about 1663, in Rouen, Normandy. He was a French Huguenot who arrived at the Cape in 1688, some sources say on «i»De Schelde«/i» but more likely as Amsterdammers on board the Amsterdam ship «i»Borssenburg«/i» («i»De Schelde«/i» sailed from Vlissingen with Flemish passengers) His wife was «b»Jeanne la BATTE«/b» of Saumur. In 1690 he received financial help for himself, his wife and two children. By 1734 they were well established in the Cape. On 9 November 1690 he purchased from Gerrit Jansz Visser the farm «i»Blaauwklip«/i», District Stellenbosch and in 1711 acquired the farm «i»Bootmans Drift«/i», Drakenstein.
