Name Pieter van der Merwe Christening 7 Jun 1709 [1] Gender Male Person ID I8906 My Genealogy Last Modified 3 Apr 2020
Father Schalk Willemse van der Merwe, c. 13 Aug 1673 d. Abt 1740 (Age ~ 66 years) Mother Anna Prévot, b. 18 Feb 1681, Marck,,,,,France
d. Bef 10 Oct 1740 (Age 59 years) Marriage 26 Feb 1696 Cape Town,,South Africa
[2, 3] - de Villiers and Pama gives the wedding date as June 1680. THis cannot be correct due to the age of the bridegroom (his baptism in 1673 is listed in the church baptismal register) and the fact that the bride only arrived at the Cape in 1680. Delia Robertson (The First Fifty Years Project http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/) gives the date of marriage as February 26, 1696, and I have used this date. This is also consistent with the birth date of the first child.
Delia Robertson cites as the source for the date: Pieter Coertzen, The Huguenots of South Africa 1688-1988 (28 Wale Street, Cape Town: Tafelberg Publishers Limited, 1988), p. 167.
