Family 1 Martha Susanna Strydom Marriage - The only source for this marriage is from Shelagh Spencer "British Settlers in Natal, 1824-1857". Information provided by email from Shelagh as far as I know the volume containing "M" is as yet unpublished. I have not been able to find any other evidence of this marriage. On the other hand a newspaper article (see notes for Robert Hamilton Macpherson) refers to a 12 year old son in 1875 which must have been from a previous marriage?)

Notes - Most likely this is the Robert Hamilton Macpherson, farmer at Pramkop in Cornelis River County, District of Harrismith. In the "Natal Witness" of October 8, 1875, it is reported that "On the 19th September last a dreadfull storm passed over the Harrismith District, and between eight and nine pm on that day (Sunday) the house of Mr. R.H. Macpherson was struck by lightning, set on fire, and totally destroyed. Mr. Macpherson's family consisted of himself, wife and four children. They were all seated in the dining-room. Mr. Macpherson engaged in reading the Bible when the house was struck. The sufferers do not know where the lightning entered, but the youngest son (a boy about 12 years of age) was struck dead. Mr. Macpherson was next to this lad, and had his hands and right leg severely burnt. The trowsers (sic) of the right leg were completely burnt off, as well as the nails in his boots. The condition of his leg is described as horrible. Mrs. Macpherson was also struck down, but not so seve
The son who died was likely his stepson - his wife was the widow Koekemoer and reported 3 children by her previous marriage at her death in 1922, however these were living ("alle meerderjarig") so likely the lightning victim is not reported. His brother "W.H. Macpherson" is William Hamitlon Macpherson - aka William Watson Macpherson who died at Harrismith in 1876.
