- «b»Henry Richards«/b» arrived at the Cape on July 2, 1850, aboard the «i»Minerva.«/i» It had left London on 26 April 1850. The Minerva was wrecked on the Bluff after dragging her anchor, with no loss of life among the passengers, but they lost all their posessions.
Also aboard the Minerva was «b»Thomas Burchmore«/b» and family. For more details of the Minerva wreck, see «b»Thomas Burchmore«/b» notes.
Recently arrived from Glasgow aboard the «i»Conquering Hero«/i» was «b»John McPherson«/b» and family. The«i» Conquering Hero«/i» was still anchored in the roadstead - the passengers had disembarked but were likely witnesses to the event from the emigrant sheds located on the point.
According to a letter from Joseph Byrne "The Richards are men who will obtain considerable capital in England if they like the colony".
Edward was a merchant. Both brothers are buried in the West St Cemetry in Durban.

1851 Jan. 21 Drew up will. Wife Anne Eliz., born Scott, inherits as long as she does not remarry. 200 acres of land on Illovo to go to son Henry John on attaining his majority. (RSC 1V/71/16 194)
1851 Mar. Appointed Executive Dative for brother Edward's estate. (NW 7.5.1851)
1852 May 17 Died at Wentworth aged 43 leaving a widow & 5 children plus 5 orphan nephews and nieces. (NT 28.5.1852)
By profession a wholesale druggist. Leaves 5 children - Anne Charlotte 10, Emmeline Mary 8, Mary Anne 6, Henrietta Elizabeth 4, Henry John 2, (MSC - IE 3/5 no 51)
1853 July Anne Eliz., aged 39, married James Randle 38. Her maiden name was Scott. She had 5 children, names as above. (CSO 2282)
1862 Mar 7 Anne Eliz., died aged 48. (Tomb Ladysmith General Cemetery)
