Hello Dorothy,
WM> The date of birth I have came from the article I mentioned, along
WM> with the dates of birth of the other children. Also the marriage
WM> date of 11 Nov. 1717
WM> It seems he must have misread the year in which the marriage took
WM> place? I must say, this article was written with authority!
I can't find this article in the FAMILIA 2009 No. 1 ??
I have written about this one before. I originally consulted the LDS
microfilm version of the Stellenbosch marriage register and took my
info for various marriages from there.
Later I obtained a copy of the same registers that had been
photocopied in the 1980s and now live in the Cape and Pretoria
archives. The 1714 marriage page in the LDS copy (which does not bear
any year date on it at all as it runs from May to November) has been
bound between a page ending with 1717 June and a page starting with
1717 September.
If this page is in fact 1714 (as in the LDS film and as I believe to
be the case) a lot of marriages fall into the correct
date, rather than being a few years later than the first children -
Van Zyl, De Vries, Odendaal. As the Archives copies are bound the page
with the date 1714 runs from Jan to April at the bottom of the page,
and the next page starts 1715.
I hope that is not too confusing. In short, the 1714 May to November
seem to have been misbound as 1717 in the Archives copy and misled a
good number of poeple.
WM> I see on MOOC8/7.1a - Willem Odendaal (jnr - my brackets) "van den
WM> landbouwer Jan Odendaal rd:s208.16 over soveel denselven in seeven termijnen
WM> moet betaalen, sijde 't geen den overleeden Willem Odendaal over d'
WM> erfportie van wijlen sijn moeder Judith Nel wed:e Willem Odendaal d'
WM> oude........) referring to Judith NEL as his mother.
Yes, seems pretty good - Judith Nel's wills would be good to read
though. The ones she made as a widow are most likely to mention the
names of her children.
Cheers,
Richard

Hello Dorothy,
WM> There seems to have been a disagreement on whether the mother of
WM> Willem * 23.10.1715 was Susanna BIEBOUW or Judith NEL.
There seems no doubt if you check the marriage and baptismal
registers, as I have just done for you:

Where did you get a birth date for Willem Odendaal?
WM> In an article I read in the FAMILIA 2009 No. 1, (by Mr. Odendaal)
WM> it was said that Judith did not include Willem in her Will, but
WM> left her farm to her son Johannes * 1719 - saying this was because
WM> Willem was not her son.
Judith Nel seems to have died around 1763 (to judge from the NAAIRS
index) and made at least one will jointly with her husband and two as
a widow. You would really need to read them all to check out that
statement which, given the inscriptions above, seems unlikely?
Cheers,
Richard
