" Is a very embellished family story - reference is to the violin teacher John Macpherson, by all accounts a fine violin player and teached but nothing to do with the royal family - see notes for John Macpherson - he did teach the children one of the local minor nobility near Edinburgh.

BARLOW, Madame MAUDE, the well-known South African dramatic soprano, is the wife of Roland Brereton Barlow, who is the son of the late Alfred Barlow, one of the best known personalities in the O.F.S., and who was the editor and proprietor of the Bloemfontein "Friend." Was born at Bloemfontein, and received her education partly at St. Michael's School and partly at the Eunice High School for Girls, Bloemfontein. Is of mixed Scottish, Welsh and Dutch descent. Her great-grandfather, William Benstead Smith, arrived in South Africa in his own vessel as the head of a party from London, and subsequently set up practice in Grahamstown as a Land Surveyor. His daughter, Primrose Allison McPherson, was the wife of John, the son of William Benstead Smith.
