Dear Ian
Thank you for your message of 5 May, and for yr kind words.
I wish I was on the R's - the Y's wd be even better, as there's only one Z!
The whole thing hangs over me like the sword of Damocles!
I'm glad that Queen's University has got my books, but I'm not as surprised
as you are, as my History professor at Natal University (PMB), Arthur
Keppel-Jones
spent a sabbatical there in the 1950s, and told us that Queen's Library had
a much
better Natal History collection than we did in the PMB University Library.
In the early
1960s he accepted a post there, so there's quite a Natal/Queen's connection.
Re McPherson: attached is a 'family table' showing as much as I've found
out so
far about John and his children. In c.1857-58 John stood surety for the fare
of
William Watson McPherson (born c.1840) - possibly he's the William
McPherson
who died in the Harrismith district on 30 June 1876 aged 36.
There's a Ladysmith McPherson I can't tie up with John, but feel there cd be
a connection, viz. Peter
McPherson who married Jane Stevenson Brown (born c.1833, Glasgow) in Glasgow
m. Nov. 1868. She died 31 July 1908 in Ladysmith - have you any
suggestions?
Please cd you see if you can add anything to the family table - or correct
anything. Also, do you
know anything about the original John McPherson?
When I have time I'll do the same thing for Henry Richards.
Best wishes,
Shelagh Spencer
