The certificate that is in the Medway Archive reads:
"This is the certify all whom it may concern that the bearer John Ladbury Master is enrolled as a SEA FENCIBLE in this district, and belongs to the charted fishery at Rochester. [handwritten note on top says "The Sally Peter Boat"] .
He is 5 feet, 4 inches high, is 20 years of age, has darkish hair and light eyes. [handwritten note on side says "Protected within the limits of the district].
Small print at base: NB in case of your learning that the Enemy is on the coast, you are to repair to the officer commanding Sea Fensibles in whatever district you may be in."
Sea Fencilbes were instituted by Lord Nelson to protect the land based ... docks etc, and were exempt from the Press Gang.
