  • Notes
    • of Ryssel (Lille) arrived in 1686 in the «i»Vryheit«/i»; became a member of the Court of Landdrost and Heemraden of Stellenbosch and Drakenstein and died in October 1731. He married Susanne Seugnet of Saint Onge at Cape Town on 12th February 1690. Their marriage is recorded in the Cape register as "«i»Den 12 Februarij sijn in den Huwelijken staedt vereenigh Francois du Toij jonghman van Rijssel ende borger op Drakenstein met Susanna Seugnet, jonge doghter van Ste. Onge. «/i»"

His brother «b»Guillaume du Toit«/b» travelled with him to the Cape. He left one daughter, so all du Toits today are descended from Francois.

It is said of Francois that he requested the farm «i»Dal Josaphat «/i»(in the vicinity of Paarl) but the Governor refused due to the presence of large numbers of Khoikhoi across the Berg River. He persisted and the Governor agreed, but he and his brother had continuous problems with the Khoikhoi, who raided their cattle. The brothers were the first Europeans to cross the «b»du Toit's Kloof Pass«/b», which bears their name.

Francois was heemraad for Stellenbosch and Drakenstein and a church elder. He was a succesful farmer, eventually owning «i»De Kleine Bos«/i» in Daljosafat, «i»Zoetendal«/i» (1712) in Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington) and «i»Limiet Rivier«/i» (1715) adjacent to «i»Zoetendal«/i».

Francois and his brother were involved in the dispute between Adam Tas and Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. They were one of the 8 burghers (another was «b»Willem van Zijl«/b») who refused to appear in court, were sentenced to banishment, and had to flee to the Vier en Twintig Riviere (near present day Piketberg) to avoid having the sentence carried out.
