    • of Mer or Menars-la-ville, northeast of Blois, in France. Was already at the Cape in 1688; one of the first deacons of the Drakenstein congregation, also Heemraad. Owned the farms «i»L'Arc d'Orleans «/i»and «i»Vleesbank«/i», Wagenmakersvallei

He is listed in the Cape Muster Roll for 1695 as "«i»Pieter Russouw & Anna Retief 4 k«/i»". What happened to the fourth child? Only three are listed in de Villiers and Pama before 1695. In the 1702 Muster Roll they are listed as "«i»Pieter Rosseau & Anna Retiev 7 k«/i»" so perhaps the fouth child died.

He seems to have been progressive for his time, Shell in "Children of Bondage" describes him as one of the few slave owners who allowed the children of his slaves to be educated, writing that: "Hoge, whose authority on such matters is unquestioned, is quite definite about this: "«i»Die kontrak van Pierre Rosseau, oud-heemraad van Drakenstein, met Gerrit Daveman gemaak het,..is die enigste kontrak waarin bepaal word dat die gehuurde skoolmeester ook die slawe van sy baas moet leer" «/i»[The contract that Pierre Rosseau, former Heemraad of Drakenstein, made with Gerrit Daveman,..is the only contract in which it is stipulated that the hired schoolmaster should also teach the slaves of his master]"
