- «b»James Peachey«/b» was born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire in «b»1780«/b» but the first record we have of him is in the census of «b»1841«/b» when at age 61, he was living in Camberwell (greater London) the birthplace of his wife. At what point in his life he moved from his home in Cambridge to the London area is not known.
«b» 1841 England Census«/b»: Living on the High Street, at St Giles Camberwell, borough of Lambeth, with his wife, and children: Elizabeth (22), Rebecca (14) and Sarah (26). Also living with them was Henrie /Henry Ellson(5). The 1841 census did not list the relationships but ten years later John D Ellson, a nephew, was living with the family so it is fairly safe to assume that Henrie was also a nephew. James' occupation was given as a "proctor's clerk" i.e. he worked for a solicitor/lawyer/proctor doing the paper work. Age 61. As James was already 61 years old it is quite possible that he had other children who had left home by the time the first available census gives us a record of the family.
It seems likely that James' eldest (that we know of) daughter, «b»Sarah «/b»married «b»Robert Fletcher «/b»in «b»1843.
«/b»
At some time between 1841 and 1848 James' middle daughter, «b»Elizabeth «/b»Peachey met and married «b»Robert Best«/b» from Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, for by 1851 they were living in Bolton, Lancashire. Robert Best was a minister in the non-conformist church, first at Kirkam then in Bolton. They had two children by 1851: Frances William "Frank" and George Best. How a young woman in Camberwell, met a young man from Northumberland, is not known at this point.
«b»1851 England Census«/b»: Here James's birth place was given as Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, and his address as given as 5 Sutherland Street, in the Civil parish of Newington, Ecclesiastical parish of Walworth St Peter, which is the community beside Camberwell. His daughter «b»Rebecca Peachey«/b» (age 24) who is described as a "teacher of the pianoforte", was living with him.
Also living with them is
John D Ellson (18), nephew; shipbroker's clerk, who later on became an Art Metal Worker
John Greaves (16), nephew; proctor's general clerk
Sarah Greaves (55), his sister-in-law, an annuant; and
Rachel Sharke (24), a female servant born in Ireland.
Occupation: Proctor's managing clerk. Age 71.
Some time between 1851 and 1858 «b»Rebecca«/b» married «b»Septimus Fletcher«/b», a bookseller, for their first child was born in 1858. Septimus Fletcher had a bother, Robert, five years older than he was, so it is likely that the two sisters married the two brothers.
«b»1861«/b» Census: Age: 81. Living with daughter, Elizabeth Peachey Best in Bolton, Lancashire
Occupation: Retired clerk. James died soon after the census was taken early in the year.
