Notes - PRIVATE
- «b»Birth Certificate «/b»says «i»John Tasker and «b»Isobel Gilchrist «/b»in Coupar had a lawful child baptised named Andrew«/i»
However his «b»Death Certificate«/b» says: Andrew Tasker, Blacksmith, married, [died] 5th March 1856 [in] Bartlach[Street], M[ale] 73 years, [parent's names] John Tasker, blacksmith, deceased, & «b»Tasker maiden name«/b» «b»Gilruth«/b», [cause of death] diarrhea, 8 days, certified by .... surgeon....[burial place] Church yard, Coupar Angus, certified by John Maule Salen [? image indistinct] [Signature, qualification & address of informant] Will«sup»m«/sup» H Lundie, son in law, Auchterarder[ very indistinct]
Who was Andrew Tasker's mother? The birth and death certificates give different names. Andrew was born to his father's first wife, Isobel Gilchrist. It is quite possible that the second wife of John Tasker was mistakenly given as Andrew's mother in this time of distress. As Andrew's father, John Tasker remarried when Andrew was only 10 years (1794) old, the family may have forgotten that he had ever had another mother. The informant was after all his son-in-law [William hannah Lundie] and may only have heard the name of the later mother...
«b»
Name «/b»taken from«b» 1841 Scotland Census Record «/b»where he is listed with his daughter, Mary.
«b»Andrew Tasker«/b», was born in«b» «/b»1784 in Coupar Angus to «b»John Tasker«/b» and «b»Isabel Gillchrist«/b».
It is not clear whether he made a career change or not, as his marriage certificate in «b»1810«/b» gives his occupation as "shopkeeper" but, the first census, the«b» 1841 Scotland Census«/b», lists him as a blacksmith. Perhaps he had a "blacksmith shop"?
At the time of that census, 1841, his address is given as Causewayend, Coupar Angus, Perthshire, and he is registered without his wife but with three children: Betty (1826), Mary Tasker (1826), and William Tasker (1821). A search of the birth records has turned up another two children, Andrew (1821) and Ann (1811) who were old enough to have left home by this stage. Although not found in the search of the birth records there is another child, Catherine, born in 1817, who would have left home by this time as well although no definite record is found of her until the 1861 census.
To note is that, on this 1841census, the date of Andrew's birth is given as 1791 (age 50), which is a 6-year discrepancy, but I think is an error as the record includes Mary. At this time the census takers rounded the age up or down by 5 years.
Ten years later when the next census was taken in «b»1851 «/b»Andrew's wife, Helen, known as "Nelly" and registered as such, was back at home and only William, a baker, (who was now 32 years old) was living with them at Causewayend. Andrew's occupation is transcribed as "blacksmith journeyman" which in Scotland meant that he was a qualified tradesman, who had served an apprenticeship. 1.
