Notes - PRIVATE
- John Ladbury has been a difficult persons to trace for it seems that he left Chatham as a young man and at age 30 was not with the family group when the 1841 Census was taken in Rochester.
But 2 years later the baptismal certificate of son, John William, in 1843 gives his occupation as fisherman and their residence as Pleasant Row, St Margaret, Rochester, Kent.
Barbara Balfe's research has found him to be "living at Gravel Walk in the navy", but could not find his navy record so concluded he worked for the navy but not on a ship.
His young family were in Woolwich in 1851, where two of his children were born, but he could not be traced due to a transcription error that had his name as "Sadbury" instead of Ladbury. However the 1851 Census shows a John Sadbury, warden, aged 40, born in Rochester, aboard either the hulk the "«i»Hebe«/i»" or the "«i»Wye«/i»" both of which were anchored in Woolwich harbour with 200 convicts aboard. These had been transferred from the "«i»Justitia«/i»" when cholera struck her in 1848.

The 1861 Census registered gives John as living at 3 Boley Hill, Rochester and gave his occupation as "Pensioner from convict depart. Mariner"
In 1862, at the marriage of his son John William to Fanny Terry his occupation is given as Dredgerman.
When the census was taken in 1871 John was 59 and living with only 21-year old Edwin, at 3 Boley Hill.
Ten years later in 1881 he is alone at 3 Boley Hill and gave his occupation as Fisherman. Edwin had married, had a child and moved to Old Mill End in London between 1881 and 1891, at which time John is again found at 3 Boley Hill, this time with a new wife, Emily L, nearly 20 years his junior. At 79 years of age he once again gave his occupation as Fisherman.
