- 1871: aged 12 years. Living at home with his parents.
1878: aged 19 years joined the Royal Navy for 10 years but served only one year on the H.M.S. Raleigh (apart from his training in barracks). On his record he was shown "in the cells" and was "invalided out" in 1878. On joining his description was given as "5"5' with brown hair, grey eyes, a fresh complexion and had a scar on his upper lip." His character was "excellent' at first but only "fair" when he left the navy.
