  PRIVATE «b»1841 Scottish Census«/b» see image Ann is listed as Ann Johnston (using her maiden name, not her married name) with 7 children and William Mather. Strangely Ann and William are listed as living at 28 West Richmond Street while all their children are listed as living next door, at 30 West Richmond Street. «b»1851 Scottish Census «/b»shows Ann living at 3 North Pick St, Edinburgh as the head of family living with: Margaret, Ann, John, Jane, Isobel, and «b»Jesse«/b». Ann's occupation is difficult to read and could be Ladies Milliner or Ladies Nurse. Husband William is not with the family group, although he is found in the 1861 Census. It seems she must have taken in lodgers as David Hanway 30 (occupation: ordinance surveyor), his wife,Sarah Hanway 28 and son, Saml Hanway 2 are registered at the same house, as is Isabella Johnston 21 (occupation: sewer) who is listed as a visitor. So where was husband, William?? Death certificate of 1858 gives the names of her mother and father. This family is proving to be extremely difficult to trace. A search of all births to list William Mather as father between 1820 and 1840 in Scotlandspeople has failed to locate ANY of these children. No William Mather is shown to have a wife called Ann Johnston. I have also been unable to find a marriage between Ann Johnston and William Mather - the nearest seems to be with an Agnes Johnstone at St Cuthbert's Edinburgh in 1821. Searching for births on the mother's name- Johnston & Johnstone- also failed to find any children.
