John, aged 7 was living at 30 West Richmond Street Edinburgh St Cuthberts

      «b»1851 Scottish Census«/b»- see scan
Occupation: Flesher, aged 16 years. Living at 3 North Pick St, Edinburgh.

No marriage certificate has yet been located. Estimated marriage date1858.

John signed his mother's death certificate in «b»1858 «/b»which is strange, for his father was still alive«b».

By 1861 «/b»he was 26 years old, married to Margaret and had a child«b», «/b»Elisabeth Mather (2) They were living at :15 Advocates Close, Edinburgh High Church, Midlothian and his occupation is given as a Flesher.«b»

By 1871«/b» the family were at 3 Tobago St, Glasgow Calton, in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Occupation: Flesher . John was still living with his wife, Margaret, and 12-year old Elisabeth.

«b»In 1881«/b» there is a record of John Mather with wife Margaret Mather living at 421 Gallowgate, Registration district Dennistoun, Civil Parish Glasgow St John, Lanarkshire, Occupation :flesher.

In«b»1891«/b» John and Marget and a lodger by the name of James McLean were still at the same address.

      John's Death certificate reads:
John Mather, Caule Dealer[?] Widower of Margaret Jamieson, [died] «b»1899 February 17th, Gallowgate«/b», Glasgow, m[ale] 63 years. Parents William Mather, Caule Dealer, (deceased) & Ann Mather [maiden name] Johnston(deceased) [cause of death, duration of disease & medical attendant by whom cerified] Pneumonia( acute 4 days) [alert?] by John Mather .... [signature and qualification of informant and residence] Elizabeth Evans[?] daughter ...

This family is proving to be extremely difficult to trace. A search of all births to list William Mather as father between 1820 and 1840 in Scotlandspeople has failed to locate ANY of these children. No William Mather is shown to have a wife called Ann Johnston. I have also been unable to find a marriage between Ann Johnston and William Mather - the nearest seems to be with an Agnes Johnstone at St Cuthbert's Edinburgh in 1821. Searching for births on the mother's name- Johnston & Johnstone- also failed to find any children.
