Notes - PRIVATE
- No birth certificate can be found for Helen Andrew, but there are two possible records that could be hers, or the possibility that her birth was not registered for an unknown reason. Her death certificate gives her age at death that would make her birthdate in 1792. There are no births for her parents registered in that year, but there are in 1790 and 1794.
The possible errors are:
that she was erroniously registered as "Anne" in 1794 - but this does not jive with her death date.
or
that she was erronously registered as "Hannah" in 1798 - but this does not jive with her death date, either.
However, when I looked at a microfilm of the parish record, it appeared to me that the birth date for "Anne" was 5 Jan 1794, which would be very close to making her 80 years old at death. Curiously there is also a registration for the birth of a child to this couple called Anne, in 1789, four years previously. It was not unusual to re-use a name of a deceased child, but it could also show the second name was registered erroniously.
As the infomant at her death was her son-in-law, it is also possible that he got the date wrong - that isn't unusual either.
«b»1833«/b»- Her father Thomas Andrew of Coupar Angus wrote a Will in which he stipulated:«i»
"The Third share for the liferent use and behoof of my daughter «b»Helen Andrew spouse of Andrew Tasker«/b» Smith in Coupar Angus during all the days of her lifetime and her children in feu and to their heirs and assignees«/i»"
Name and dates taken from the 1851 Census.[Note: the census takers routinely rounded the birth dates up to as much as 5 years, so the census dates are often approximate.]
«b»1811«/b» Marriage certificate clearly states "Andrew Tasker and Helen Andrews both of this parish..."
A search on ScotlandsPeoples [The web-based records of the Scottish General Records Office] has returned no birth certificate for Helen Andrews in the time frame.
«b»1851 Scotland Census«/b» shows "«b»Nelly" Tasker«/b» aged 58 living with husband Andrew, aged 66, in Coupar Angus at "Causwayend". Living with them is their 32-year old son, William Tasker, a baker.
«b»1861 Scotland Census«/b» shows "«b»Helen" Tasker,«/b» aged 67, living with her daughter Catherine at New Road in Coupar Angus. Helen's occupation is given as a«b» «/b»Stocking Kniter; her daughter's as "confectioner".
Between the Census in 1851 and 1861 son William left for America, for his marriage was registered in 1856 in Jones County, Iowa.
1856 is also the year in which Nelly was widowed.
I have not yet located a census record for either Nelly or Catherine Tasker in 1871 although Nelly died in Coupar Angus the following year in George Street (Catherine's house) of old age.
Death record:
Helen Tasker (Widow of Andrew Tasker, Blacksmith) 1872 October 29th George St, Perthshire, F[emale], 80yrs. Patents Thomas Andrew, Cloth merchant (deceased) & Annie Andrew m.n. Bain (deceased), cause Senile decay. Informant David Sidey, Son-in-law. George St, Coupar Angus.
Although the death certificate gives no hint of it, her son John C Tasker was concerned that he might die of "soft brain' as his mother had done. {see John C Tasker's Will in Tasker file)
