    • «b»John«/b» was a 55-year old tailor living in Blackertt St, Newcastle upon Tyne, in«b» 1841«/b». With him were his wife, Elizabeth and son, 15-year old, «b»Robert«/b» (listed as a CL= clerk), and George who was 13 - no occupation given.

The names of his other children have come to us through correspondence between Rebecca Peachey Best and Arthur Morley in 1937.

«b»1851 Census«/b»: children Andrew... and his wife, Elizabeth living with him.

There are records of the birth of 2 John Best's in the time period:
      1) JOHN BEST «tab»
      «tab»Christening: «tab»
      27 NOV 1790 «tab»Corsenside, Northumberland, England
      «tab»Parents:
      «tab»THOMAS BEST «tab»& JANE

      2) JOHN BEST
      «tab»Birth: 29 DEC 1791 «tab»
«tab»Christening: 19 FEB 1792 «tab»«b»St Andrew Par Reg And Nonconf«/b», Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England
      Parents: «tab»Father: «tab»WILLM BEST & «tab»ANN «tab»

This second record is the most likely as John called his first son "William" and he came from a family with connections to a Nonconformist church. However there is, presently, no way to know for certain.
Although neither of these birth dates corresponds to the census records it must be noted that the census takers, at this time, recorded the births within a 5 year range, so one of these is possibly our ancestor.

"His parents, John and Elizabeth Best, were of plain circumstances and strict piety. The mother, whose religious life influenced her son, was originally connected with the Scottish Covenanters. For the ordinary means of existence the striggle in the household was keen and prolonged, The father, in the capacity of a master tailor, had the misfortune to commence business without a patron, a customer, or a penny of capital. His indefatigable partner, in addition to the training of eight sons amd two daughters, acted as bookkeeper."
Memoir of Rev Robert Best" p 1
