"His parents, John and Elizabeth Best, were of plain circumstances adn strict piety. The mother, whose religious life influenced her son, was originally connected with the Scottish Covenanters. For the ordinary means of existence the striggle in the household was keen and prolonged, The father, in the capacity of a master tailor, had the misfortune to commence business without a patron, a customer, or a penny of capital. His indefatigable partner, in addition to the training of eight sons amd two daughters, acted as bookkeeper."
