  PRIVATE In the «b»1851 England Census«/b» Thomas Best is recorded as being 34 years old, "a master joiner employing 1 man" and living in a house beside the Railway Hotel, possibly "Wrong Way" in Kirkham, (Civil parish: Medlar With Wesham, Ecclesiastical parish: Kirkham, County/Island: Lancashire ) Northumberland. Living in the house are his wife, and children; two daughters and two sons ranging in age from 8 years to 4 months. Ten years later («b»1861 England Census«/b») Thomas and his family are living in Parr (Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary, County/Island: Lancashire) and he gave his occupation as "Railway Car. Builder". All the children of the family were still living at home. Amelia at 18 was a milliner; Thomas at 17 was a Col«sup»y«/sup» colliery? clerk; John at 15 was an attorney clerk; daughter Jane was now 10 years old; sister Agnes J has joined the family. Agnes is 8. I do not know where he was in 1871 - no census record yet found. In «b»1881«/b» Thomas, now 64, was widowed and living with his son, Thomas, in Victoria Park, Wavertree, Lancashire. At this time he gave his occupation as "Builder". In the «b»1891 England Census«/b» Thomas at 76 was still living with his son Thomas. The family were still in Victoria Park, Wavertree, Lancashire where the house now has a name, possibly "«i»Sleima«/i»". Thomas's occupation was given as "retired Coal Merchant". The family had a 19-year old domestic servant, Mary Crompton. Correspondence between Rebecca Best (Lundie) and Arthur Morley in 1937 reports that Thomas married a Miss Wheeler late in life. There is a record of a Thomas Best and a Jane Best living in Manitoba, Canada with the correct birth date for Thomas. It is not clear yet, if this is the same man.
