The story goes that uncle Batchin was dispatched to register the new baby's name and when he got there he inserted his own name as George's second name, without consultation with anyone. Apparently Grandpa disliked this name all his life. I have an almost illegible copy of the wedding certificate between Jane Mather and xxx Batchin. 1888 George Batchin Thompson metions a visit to their home by his uncle George Batchin and Geo.
